Get a Fish Board

Surfboards come in all different shapes, but fish boards are among the most popular. A Fish surfboard is usually between 5’10-7’0, although there are fish boards larger than 7’0. A fish board can even be as big as an 11’ stand up paddle board. Isle surfboards has a Fish Board for everyone, ranging from 5’5 – 11’. At Isle Surfboards we carry several different models of fish board. Check out our lineup of Fish Boards. We offer the Quad Fish, Monster Fish , Wing Tri Fish, Speed Quad Fish and Retro Fish Woody Twin Fin.

A Fish surfboard and It’s Tail

The most common question asked about a Fish board, is why the tail is shape the way it is? The fish board tail is design to allow the board to keep its’ fullness throughout the length of the board. A fish board is generally wider and thicker than a typical shortboard. This makes a fish board optimal for small or mushy waves. A fish board is also a good surfboard for those who want a shorter board, but whose skills are not tuned enough for a shortboard. The Fish Board tail also allows the surfer to make maneuvers without slowing down. This characteristic comes in handy in less than perfect conditions.

Quad, Twin or Tri - That is the Question

Fish Boards typically come with one of three fin set ups. A fish board with a twin fit set up is typically called a retro fish board. This fin set up allows the fish board to gain a lot of speed, due to less drag from a center fin. However, the Twin Fin Fish Boards can be a little “loose” in turns. A Fish Board can also come with a tri-fin set up, and will ride more like a shortboard. The third type of fins that a fish board typically comes with is a quad set up. A quad set up has become very popular in recent years. A Quad Fish Board will have the speed of a twin fin, and the stability of a tri fin.

The Right Fish Board for You

Due to the width of a Fish Board, as discussed earlier, you can typically get a fish board 2-4” smaller than a recommended shortboard. A 5'10-6'2 fish board would be good for someone who typically rides a 6’2 -6’4 board. If you are new to surfing, a fish board is a good board to start on. A 6’4-6'7 fish board would be a great first board for any new surfer who has some board sporting experience. While a fish board would be superb for a “sporty” new comer to an experienced surfer, if you are a beginner with no board sport experience stay clear of a fish board and simply start with a longboard.
