A Brief History Of the Stand UP Paddle Surfboard
Stand Up Paddle originated as a way for Hawaiian locals to take pictures of tourists learning to surf in wakiki in the early 1960's and has turned into an all out phenomenon. It has lately been acquired by those who wanted an alternative way to ride surf or purely as a way to stay in shape and is now more commonly called SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding). This brief guide will help you with the process of selecting a Stand Up Paddle Surfboard along with the accessories you need to get started.
Selecting a Stand Up Paddle Surfboard
The three most important factors in selection your ideal Stand Up Paddle Surfboard are the Length, Width and Thickness of the board.
Length:
Choosing your new Stand Up Paddle Board may not be as difficult as you think. Isle Surfboards offers Stand Up Paddle Surfboards in four lengths 10'0, 10' 6, 11'0 and 11'6. Just like a surf board the longer the board, the more stability it offers. The shorter the SUP board the easier it is to maneuver but may be harder to paddle and glide for the inexperienced SUP'er.
Width:
The width of your new stand up paddle board affects the stability of the board. The average Stand Up Paddle width is around 29”, so if you are looking for an easy cruising Stand Up Paddle Surfboard, check out our 29”- 31” wide boards. If you are looking for more of a challenge and maneuverability the 27”- 28” wide Stand Up Paddle Boards will be just right for you.
Thickness:
The thickness of your new stand up paddle board is also another important factor. Stand Up thickness ranges from 4 1/2" to 4 3/4". This extra thickness gives the board tremendous wave catching ability while also providing a stable platform to balance on.

Once you have chosen a new Stand Up Paddle Board you MUST have a Stand Up Paddle and Leash.
The Stand Up Paddle:
The obvious next step is picking out a paddle. Isle Surfboards offers both wood and carbon fiber SUP paddles. Isle Surfboards offers the Whiskey Jack Paddle for a wood paddle. Wood offers a more authentic feel yet tends to be slightly heavier than the ultra light carbon paddles. Also the recommended rule of thumb length for a paddle is 6" - 8" above your height. The Wooden paddles are already sized and come in several lengths 73",76",78", and 80". For the carbon fiber we offer the Isle Surfboards Carbon Fiber Paddle . The Carbon Fiber Paddle comes in one standard 86" length and can be cut down to your specification.
Leash:
If your stand up surfboard gets loose, you got a lethal weapon in the lineup. NEVER use the board in the surf zone without a leash.
