Helpful Gift Buying Tips

Epoxy, Fiberglass or Softboards

  • There are three types of Surfboard construction.
  • Epoxy boards are more buoyant, which makes paddling and catching waves easier. However, duck diving and turning the board is more difficult.
  • Fiberglass boards are the traditional way that surfboards are made, and tend to be the construction of choice for experienced surfers.
  • Softboards are made with a wood stringer and foam core, but instead of a hard resin, they are made with a soft Vinyl outer layer. These boards are great for kids or any beginners.

Buying a Beginner a Surfboard for a Gift

  • The most basic rule is "the bigger the board the easier it is to ride"
  • A beginner should get a board at least 6"- 8" above their height.
  • The thicker and wider the board is the more buoyant it will be. If you are getting a heavier set surfer a board... go longer, these boards will also be wider and thicker.
  • A rounded nose board will be easier to stand up on than a board with a pointed nose. The round nose offers more stability.

Buying a Stand Up Paddle Board for a Gift

  • The same rule applies... a bigger board will be the easiest for a beginner SUP'er.
  • A 10'-10'6 SUP is great for smaller beginners or those who already have surfing experience.
  • An 11'-12' SUP will be a good starter board for anyone else.
  • To use a SUP board you must have a Paddle and Traction for you board. Take advantage or our package deals. A leash is needed if the board will be taken into surf.
