Old school fish surfboard

Making a comeback!

The old school fish surfboard is back! Even as new advances are being made with shortboards, and as the shortboard shapes get better and better, surfers continually return to the old school fish surfboard as the staple in their surf quiver. Why is that? It's easy…their need for speed! This board is geared for down the line speed.

Little history for ya:

The fish originally came out of San Diego, CA as a knee board. It's wide template and easy turning made it popular with knee boarders until they realized they could stand up on the boards and ride them. Steve Lis is credited with being one of the originators of the fish design, and it was made popular by Mark Richards. The old school fish surfboard is usually constructed with a twin fin or twin keel setup, and is made for drawn out turns, not airs like the modern shortboard.

Benefits of an old school fish:

The old school fish surfboard is designed with a flat round nose, making for easy paddling. The rounded nose adds planing area to the board, thus increasing speed. As the board has low rocker, the board is more prone to pearl than a shortboard, but also makes catching waves a lot less difficult. You're able to generate a lot of speed in smaller waves and sloppier conditions, making surfing more enjoyable on a fish than a shortboard in these types of conditions. This board is also fun and holds in up to head high surf. When you get going on a hollow wave while riding an old school fish surfboard, you'll feel the speed that separates these boards from all others. The soft rails provide easy rail to rail transitions and the swallow tail design adds to the speed of the board, and aids in maneuvering. The old school fish surfboard is a must have for any quiver.
