Selecting a Stand Up Paddling SurfBoard

Choosing the correct stand up paddling board is the first step in getting started in your new pastime. The bigger the board, the easier your first time stand up paddling will be. Most newcomers prefer to begin stand up paddling on an 11’0 or 12’0 stand up paddling board.
However, if you picture yourself stand up paddling on a regular basis you may want to get something a shorter. A 10’6 – 11’ stand up paddling board would be a good size. A shorter board may cause you to spend more time in the water your first few times out stand up paddling, but in the long run you will be happy you went shorter.
If you are a surfer, or participate in different board sports, you may discover stand up paddling comes bit more natural to you. In this case, a 10’ – 11’ would be perfect for you depending on your height and weight.

What you need to start stand up paddling

Choosing A Paddle. Along with the correct size stand up paddling board, you will need a paddle. There are many different constructions for stand up paddling paddles, but among the most popular are wood paddles and carbon fiber paddles. Traditional stand up paddling is done with wooden paddles, although many now prefer the carbon fiber paddles. This is due to carbon’s light weight and durability, which will keep you stand up paddling longer.

When stand up paddling, you will want a paddle that measures 6”-8” above your head. Some paddles come pre-size, others you will have to cut down prior to stand up paddling. If you must cut down your new paddle, make sure you do not cut off too much, you can never glue it back on.

Traction is the other accessory that you must have to begin stand up paddling. While some SUPers use surfboard wax, most apply a full length traction pad before stand up paddling. Some stand up paddling tractions come in one solid piece, while other come in multiple pieces for optimal coverage. Either way you will need something to keep you from slipping off while stand up paddling.

Do I need a leash? While you do not have to have a leash while flat water paddling, a stand up paddling leash will be need if you plan to be paddling in waves. If a stand up paddling board gets away from you, it could be dangerous to others in the surf. Generally a thick 10’ leash will do for stand up paddling.
